We’re having fun this week adding a few songs to honor the season and the weather! Thank you so much for the joy of your presence this week and every week!

Village: Dew Drops, week 3

Our focus this week is on steady beat and rhythm patterns. Steady beat is the unchanging continuous pulse in music and rhythm patterns are the patterns of sound within the steady beat. This week we sing along to “Lavender’s Blue” while we move our baby’s arms and legs in gentle exercise. We explore different ways to bounce our babies all the way to “Banbury Cross.” Both of these are examples of ways we help our children experience steady beat. The two-beat pattern in part A of “Rig-a-Jig” and the three-beat pattern in part B, shows the contrast between two different kinds of rhythm and we experience that contrast by varying our movement. At home, put on some music and clap along, walk along, tap along with your baby to the music. Alternate between using the steady beat of the music or the rhythmic patterns of the melody to do your tapping and clapping.

Our Time: Wiggles & Giggles, week 11

Our focus this week is musical binary form, which is music that consists of two parts – part A and part B. In Kindermusik class, we help emphasize the difference in the two parts by using different kinds of movements for each part. Flipping between part A and part B as we sing the verses and the refrain provides a powerful learning process. In “All the Day Long,” we walk in a circle clapping then we stand and clap our hands or tap our

feet. In “Jingle Bell Symphony,” we listen for the musical cues that tell us to play quiet and heavy or loud and light. These contrasts in movement and playing help to strengthen skills like listening, coordination, and taking turns. You can practice these skills at home by using different movements for contrasting parts of any song. Walk or jump, wave your hands or clap, clap sitting down or standing up – or ask your child what they’d like to do and follow along!

I was reading the blog of our friends at Pied Piper Studio in Iowa and a recent blog entry really struck home. Molly Hagkull mentioned her worry about becoming “The Temple of Large Colorful Plastic” as a result of the well-meaning generosity of family and friends at Christmas time. I look at the chaos of [...] Read more

My father introduced me to Big Band music, Dixieland jazz, and Spike Jones. My mom [...] Read more

Or you’re baking meringues and you carefully separate the egg whites into a bowl, then beat them rapidly with a whisk. You are building a birdhouse with your child and you pick up a [...] Read more
